High Tech Facts

  • Air Force Global Strike Command, activated on August 7, 2009 at Barksdale Air Force Base, is the United States Air Force’s tenth major command.
  • Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI) is a fiber optics network that connects supercomputers at Louisiana’s major research universities, with computation speeds more than 1000 times faster than previously possible. In addition, LONI is connected to the national LambdaRail.
  • Louisiana’s supercomputer Queen Bee is the 23rd most powerful supercomputer in the world and ranked fourth among the supercomputers owned by U.S. higher education institution.
  • The IBM P5-575, nicknamed “Bluedawg,” is the LONI project server at Louisiana Tech University. In the time it takes to blink, the computer will complete 2 billion calculations.
  • Louisiana Tech University ranked third in micro and nanotechnology education in the nation in 2006, according to SmallTimes magazine. The university also granted the first worldwide bachelors degree in nanosystems engineering in 2007.
  • Louisiana Tech University ranked #2 in the nation among U.S. academic institutions for the number of patents issues per research dollar expended (AUTM U.S. Licensing Activity Survey)
  • Louisiana Tech University ranked #7 in the nation among U.S. academic institutions in R&D productivity (when normalized based upon institutional research expenditures – AUTM U.S. Licensing Activity Survey)
  • Louisiana Tech University also ranked seventh in the nation in 2009, according to SmallTimes magazine, for commercializing nanotechnology inventions, and has been issued 25 patents.
  • Louisiana State University at Shreveport, Louisiana State University Health Science Center and Louisiana Tech have joined together to offer an inter-institutional PhD in Bioinformatics.
  • Louisiana State University at Shreveport is home to “Crayfish,” a custom-built 180-node cluster supercomputer facility used for bioinformatics and other computation-intensive research.
  • Shreveport is home to the Biomedical Research Foundation of Northwest Louisiana.  It is credited with:
    • $130 million investment to advance research at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport and support technology commercialization activities.
    • The PET Imaging Center, which currently ranks third in the nation.
    • InterTech Science Park, an 800-acre urban science and technology park in Shreveport.
  • Ruston is home to a 50,000 sf biomedical research building.  The incubator was fully committed with tenant companies before the door opened.
