New Programs Aim to Lure Young into Digital Jobs
Hybrid careers like Dr. John Halamka’s that combine computing with other fields will increasingly be the new American jobs of the future, labor experts say. In other words, the nation’s economy is going to need more cool nerds. But not enough young people are embracing computing — often because they are leery of being branded nerds.
Educators and technologists say two things need to change: the image of computing work, and computer science education in high schools. Teacher groups, professional organizations like the Association for Computing Machinery and the National Science Foundation are pushing for these changes, but so are major technology companies including Google, Microsoft and Intel. White House Picks New Cyber Coordinator
The White House has tapped a coorporate cyber security expert and former Bush administration official to lead the effort to shore up the country's computer networks and better coordinate with companies that operate 80 percent of those critical systems. Full article...

And the Happiest State is...Louisiana?
Measures of the quality of life in various states are closely tied to the individual levels of happiness of the people who live in those states, according to a ponderous publication on the science of happiness appearing today in the journal Science. The careful, mathmatical analysis by British researchers showed that Louisiana was the happiest state, followed by Hawaii and Florida. California ranked a distant 46th.

National Computer Science Education Week
The U.S. House of Representatives recently designated December 6–12, 2009 as Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) in recognition of the transformative role of computing and necessity of rigorous computer science education at all levels. The CSEdWeek website, www.CSEdWeek.org, launches the week of Dec. 6 to be a hub for computer science education resources and social networking. The development of CSEdWeek is a joint effort led by ACM with the cooperation and deep involvement of the Computer Science Teachers Association, the Computing Research Association, the National Center for Women & Information Technology, the Anita Borg Institute, the National Science Foundation, Google, Inc., Intel, and Microsoft.
