BOSSIER CITY, La. – Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) is evaluating a new defense tech designed to improve the way Airmen load munitions onto the B-52 Stratofortress, reducing workload while increasing efficiency and reliability.

Developed through STRIKEWERX, AFGSC's innovation hub, the project modernizes the ADU-468 hydraulic munitions loader currently used across the B-52 fleet. The upgrade replaces a manually operated wrench with a remote-controlled motorized system, reducing the physical effort required during loading operations while streamlining the process.

The project began in 2025 when Global Strike National Security Fellow Norman Pritchard, then an undergraduate student at Louisiana Tech University, partnered with AFGSC to explore improvements to the system. During the fellowship, Pritchard developed digital models by reverse engineering the existing loader, creating the foundation for design refinement, prototyping, and testing.

“The successful prototype test of our ADU-468 modification represents a big step forward,” said U. S. Air Force Master Sgt. Mark Dravland, project champion within AFGSC's Logistics Directorate. “For years, our weapons loaders have performed arduous manual tasks in a highly demanding operation, and this test has proven that a seemingly small innovation can have a profoundly powerful impact on mission effectiveness.”

Testing indicates the kit could save approximately 25 minutes during each loading effort. The projected cost of each kit is less than $1,000, offering a low-cost solution with potential applications across all ADU-468 loaders currently in service.

Beyond reducing time and labor requirements, the modification is expected to improve equipment reliability and enhance safety for Airmen conducting weapons loading operations. The affordability and scalability of the kit make it a strong candidate for fielding across the enterprise.

“We are profoundly grateful for the visionary leadership, funding, and technical support provided by the AFGSC Office of the Chief Scientist, STRIKEWERX, and the Air Force Life Cycle Management Program Office teams,” Dravland added. “This long-anticipated capability is a direct result of their relentless commitment to innovation and delivering value for our most precious asset, our warfighters.”

The project delivered a complete development package, including a prototype kit, formal test plans and procedures, safety documentation, and an execution framework to support evaluation and potential implementation.

Operational testing was conducted at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, in early July 2026. Stakeholders will review the results to inform future certification and fielding decisions. If approved, the effort could lead to production of kits for use throughout the fleet, providing a cost-effective alternative to procuring new loading equipment.
